Six Sigma Master Black Belts show how to create and implement a corporate sustainability strategy using Six Sigma

Six Sigma for Sustainabilityexplains how to get started with a corporate sustainability program or take existing sustainability programs to a higher level of systematic management and production of results. Regardless of why large companies are going green, the shift is never an easy one, particularly within large corporations, where change can be glacial. That’s where this book comes in—it’s the perfect resource for CEOs launching or professionalizing an environmental sustainability program, and Six Sigma Green or Black Belts charged with running a green or sustainability strategy.

The authors show how typical Six Sigma/DMAIC structures lend themselves to sustainability, and how to use the power and tools of Six Sigma to help solve the challenge of sustainability. They explain in detail how typical sustainability problems such as carbon emissions, energy conservation, materials recycling, water use, and finance can be solved using Six Sigma tools. This is a practical, case-based book on the topic of sustainability program implementation.

Six Sigma for Sustainability

Offers a unique approach—familiarizes the Six Sigma expert with sustainability issues, and vice versa

Discusses how to be “more good” instead of “less bad”

Uses examples from The Natural Step and the 4 systems conditions (extraction, creation, disruption, and basic human needs)

Provides an overview of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the Carbon Disclosure Project

A practical guide to designing products with the environment and sustainability in mind

Now in paperback, Design for Environment, Second Edition sets forth the motivation and accepted methods for a business practice called Design for Environment (DFE), drawing upon the experiences of dozens of major U.S. corporations. Because of rising concerns about corporate environmental responsibility, DFE has become a key element of new product development. This book provides a unifying framework, based on sound management principles, whereby companies can simultaneously improve their financial performance and benefit the global environment. At the heart of this approach is the concept of “eco-efficiency,” a measurable characteristic of products and processes that quantifies how companies generate more value with less adverse environmental impact.

The purpose of the book is to provide both an informative introduction and a useful primary reference to those who wish to understand and practice DFE. It contains many concrete techniques, guidelines, and examples that will help to educate product development teams, both veterans and novices, about the practical aspects of DFE. It emphasizes a life-cycle approach, which considers the “cradle-to-cradle” costs and benefits associated with material acquisition, transportation, production, product use, and recovery for recycling or remanufacture. At the same time and for the benefit of senior managers, the book provides a sweeping overview of the cultural, political and economic changes that are transforming the role of environmental management in the business world.

Design for Environment, Second Edition

Includes anecdotal examples and graphical illustrations

Presents industry-based implementation examples

Shows how companies can redesign value delivery systems, including products and processes, to achieve both environmental excellence and economic prosperity

Includes insights on how DFE methods can be seamlessly integrated into existing business practices, including innovation, product development, marketing, and life cycle management.

Contains examples of leading companies that have put DFE into practice across a range of industries

Intended as a textbook for undergraduate students, this new edition includes expanded focus on security measures, privatization of airports, and energy efficiency. Young (aviation, Ohio State U.) and Wells (consultant on airport management) begin with a general and historical discussion of airport systems, and then focus on operations and administrative management. Each chapter opens with an outline and objectives and closes with key terms and questions for review. The book closes with references to the application sections of the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 150 Series Advisory circulars. A helpful glossary and expansion of abbreviations are also included. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
