At 600 pages, the Handbook of PVC Pipe Design and Construction is extraordinarily comprehensive. Written by the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association (www.uni-bell.org), it was prepared with the objective of being the most comprehensive reference text on PVC pipe and fittings.

For the engineer, the Handbook of PVC Pipe Design and Construction provides practical engineering and construction information. It also delivers recommendations for the design and use of underground PVC piping systems in both pressure and non-pressure applications. The handbook is in broad use by engineers across North America. The utility and consulting engineering sectors as well as in universities and technical institutions are prime users.

Project planning, goals, coordination, implementation, and documentation are covered in detail.

LEED-New Construction Project Management provides a tested framework for taking a project from inception to successful certification and shows you how to master the tools to make the process more efficient. Three in-depth case studies covering new commercial building construction, major renovations, and a portfolio of buildings highlight the strategies presented in the book.

LEED-New Construction Project Management covers:

The LEED rating system and LEED-NC credit categories

The project management process

Project definition and goal setting

Design phase integration

Construction phase implementation

The LEED process: adaptability, applicability, and best practices

Future trends

Credit implementations: sustainable sites; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; indoor environmental quality; innovation in design

Review

1. SciTech Book News, February 2011 issue

This guide to LEED project management provides a comprehensive, start-to-finish manual for the design and construction of environmentally sustainable new construction projects. Chapters cover the design process in detail, including the early introduction of LEED principles into architectural decision making, defining the sustainability goals of the project, and specific calculations and standards necessary for earning the LEED rating. Several case studies of successful LEED certified projects are included as well as a collection of credit implementation worksheets and example documentation. Numerous tables, charts and illustrations are included throughout the work and online access to construction tables and blank forms is provided. Yellamraju is the owner of Green Potential, a green building and LEED certification consulting company in Austin, Texas. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Review

1. SciTech Book News, April 2011 issue

An engineer for a geotechnical company in San Diego, California, Day updates his 2006 guidelines to account for the 2009 International Building Code. He augments the emphasis on analysis in college engineering education by discussing some practical aspects and the kinds of engineering judgment that must be acquired through experience. He considers only clean dirt — soil free from known or suspected hazardous materials that need the attention of environmental engineers. Only the section on code compliance has been significantly altered. The other sections cover geotechnical engineering, foundation design, and foundation construction. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc.
Review

1. SciTech Book News, April 2011 issue

Haselbach, who is not further identified, updates her 2008 reference and textbook to incorporate version 3.0 (2009) of the US Green Building Council’s widely used standard Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Focusing on aspects of the standard that are relevant to construction, she considers sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design process and regional priorities, a systematic view of green and minimum program requirements, Department of Defense sustainable construction and indoor quality, and low-impact development and stormwater issues.
