Discover how to create cool Arduino devices that “talk” to Android smartphones and tablets!

Arduino + Android Projects for the Evil Geniusbrings two popular open-source technologies together with a series of hands-on projects that marry the worlds of touch-screen devices and physical computing. The book covers the Android Open Application Development Kit and USB interface, showing you how to use it with the basic Arduino platform. Other projects demonstrate methods of communication between Android and Arduino—including sound, Bluetooth, and WiFi/Ethernet—that don’t require the ADK at all.

From fun, inventive projects such as building a Geiger counter or Bluetooth-controlled Arduino robot, to practical home automation projects, the book contains something for everyone. Included is a beginner’s guide to programming the Arduino that will help those who are new to the platform start with a firm foundation.

Arduino + Android Projects for the Evil Genius

McGraw-Hill Bestselling Evil Genius Series Top 5

The Evil Genius series has received the following review in the Spring 2010 issue of Make: Technology on Your Time (circulation 100,000):

Simply Genius

Evil Genius book series

$25 each McGraw-Hill/TAB Electronics

Since 2004, McGraw-Hill has released 25 Evil Genius book filled with projects sure to stoke the imaginations of the most jaded makers amongst us.  The books run the gamut from robots to bionics to home automation.  Although some are targeted at a high school demographic, some will provide a good challenge for adults, and many projects could be done by junior high students under adult supervision. My favorites are two challenging books written by Thomas Petruzzellis [ISBN 007-1470360, Electronics Sensors for the Evil Genius: 54 Electrifying Projects and ISBN 007-1489290, 22 Radio and Receiver Projects for the Evil Genius.] The sensor book covers projects to measure sound, light, temperature, vibration, magnetic/electric fields, and radiation.  While the radio receiver book is perhaps most advanced, it will guide you in monitoring the radio spectrum from VLF to UHF as well as lightning storms, the northern lights, or the planet Jupiter.  This year promises six new books in the series.”

FROM CIRCUIT FAINT HEART TO CIRCUIT LION HEART IN 57 EASY AND FUN LESSONS

Featuring everything an electronics hobbyist could want to learn about circuits and circuit design, Dave Cutcher’s Electronic Circuits for the Evil Genius makes it fun to achieve genuine mastery, one simple lesson at a time. What’s more, when you’re done, you’ll have 5 complete projects to show for your efforts!

5 FUN AND INSTRUCTIVE PROJECTS

Cutcher’s 57 lessons build on each other and add up to projects you’ll be proud to display, play with, and put to practical use. You don’t need to know anything about electronics to begin building:

  • A night light that turns itself on as darkness falls, and off at dawn’s first light
  • A professional-quality burglar alarm
  • A toy that thinks for itself with logic gates
  • An application that counts — built on your own design
  • A two-way intercom using transistors and op amps

BUILD HANDS-ON EXPERTISE

Designed to teach through doing, Electronic Circuits for the Evil Genius provides hours of rewarding fun. That’s not all. This book gives you valuable experience in circuit construction and design. You learn to test, modify, and observe results — skills you can put to work in all the exciting circuit-building projects in your future.

Dave Cutcher makes it easy for you to master electronic circuits. Electronic Circuits for the Evil Genius gives you:

  • Illustrated instructions and plans for amazing pretested projects advanced enough for sophisticated electronics enthusiasts but described in sufficient detail to be built easily by newcomers
  • Frustration-free plans — needed parts are listed, along with sources
  • Full instructions on using a digital multimeter and turning your computer into an oscilloscope
  • Templates for CAD work and a link to a great public domain CAD program
  • Online access to an inexpensive kit (around $50) containing all the materials you need to build these projects (you can, of course, buy parts individually, wherever you choose)

GO TO: www.books.mcgraw-hill.com/authors/cutcher for:

  • Animations
  • Answers to worksheet problems
  • Links to other resources
  • .WAV files to be used as frequency generators
  • Freeware so you can apply your PC as an oscilloscope

DEVELOP POWERFUL CIRCUIT SKILLS THE FUN WAY!

Create your own 3-D holograms easily

Holography is a subject with one foot in the arts, and another in the sciences. (The technology behind holography is based on physics. Once understood, this foundation is an invaluable aid to the understanding of optics.) On one level, it is possible to understand relatively little science, and experiment with the creative aspects of holography, and on another level, it is possible to tap a rich vein of scientific experimentation. This makes the book appeal to a wide audience, as it is possible to get stunning results with relatively little understanding of the science. The scientist will be able to expand upon a simple repertoire of techniques, and augment the craft with improved scientific knowledge gained from the book.

As a hobby, holography underwent a surge of interest in the 70s and 80s, and then took a dip in the 90s as a result of the lack of availability of quality holographic emulsions. However, Fuji has recently released a new holographic emulsion, and other companies have followed suit. In addition, the cost of laser pointer diodes has come down drastically, making holography much more affordable and within the reach of the average experimenter.

Features

  • The most up-to-date resource for this newly improved—and more affordable—field.
  • Features more than a dozen distinct projects, complete with all required tools, materials, and an international source for everything in the book.
  • Appeals to those in the art world as well as the scientific field.
  • Includes a detailed international source of all holographic material suppliers.
  • More than 100 holograms will be posted on an associated website.

Amp up your understanding of electricity and magnetism with DOZENS OF DO-IT-YOURSELF EXPERIMENTS

Electricity Experiments You Can Do At Home is a hands-on guide that helps you master the principles of electrical currents and magnetism. Each of the book’s three sections–direct current, alternating current, and magnetism–begins with step-by-step instructions for setting up your lab for the experiments that follow. Using inexpensive, easy-to-find parts, the experiments progress from basic to more complex and will spark ideas and encourage inventiveness. Expect unexpected results when you experiment with:

  • Diode-based voltage reducer
  • Compass-based galvanometer
  • Photovoltaic illuminometer
  • Utility bulb saver
  • Ripple filter
  • Xener-diode voltage regulator
  • AC spectrum monitor
  • Ampere’s law with wire loop
  • AC electromagnet
  • Handheld wind turbine
  • And dozens more projects

Electricity Experiments You Can Do At Home helps you to:

  • Solve circuit problems in electricity
  • Build practical and interesting electrical and magnetic devices
  • Get ideas for science-fair projects
  • Prepare for advanced courses in electricity and electronics
  • Learn the basics of laboratory practice
