Jim J. Zhao, P.E., Chief Bridge Engineer with Nolan Associates, Inc, (Ellicott City, MD). In charge of bridge design and overall project management. Demetrius Tonias, P.E. (Concord, New Hampshire) – award-winning author of numerous works pertaining to civil engineering, in general, and transportation engineering in particular. An engineer for a geotechnical company in San Diego, California, Day updates his 2006 guidelines to account for the 2009 International Building Code. He augments the emphasis on analysis in college engineering education by discussing some practical aspects and the kinds of engineering judgment that must be acquired through experience. He considers only clean dirt — soil free from known or suspected hazardous materials that need the attention of environmental engineers. About the Author


Robert W. Day (San Diego, CA) is a leading forensic engineer and the chief engineer at American Geotechnical in San Diego, California. The author of over 200 published technical papers, he serves on advisory committees for several professional associations, including ASCE, ASTM, and NCEES. Mr. Day holds both bachelors and masters degrees in structural engineering from Villanova University and a master’s in civil engineering and a civil engineer degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the author of five McGraw-Hill books on geotechnical engineering and a contributor to numerous handbooks on the subject.
